The State of Texas does not operate on a points system. Your Texas driver’s license may be suspended if you have four moving violations or more within 12 months, or you have seven moving violations or more within 24 months. There are fees and fines if you plead guilty to a traffic ticket.
Out of State Licenses
Thanks to the Driver’s License Compact, signed by 45 states and Washington, DC, states share information about traffic violations with one another. Texas is a state that shares information. If you receive a ticket in any of those states, information about it will get back to the state that issued your driver’s license. How your home state handles that information, however, will vary. That doesn’t mean you will be exempt from any other penalties, such as fines, of course. More here
License Suspension
A person will automatically get their license suspended for a number of moving violations. Any driver who commits four moving violations in a 12-month period, or seven moving violations in a 24-month period will have their license suspended immediately. You can also have your license suspended if you commit a serious violation such as a DUI, causing injury or death with your vehicle, or having an accident with no car insurance. In Texas, you can contest a suspension within 20 days and you will be given a court date to try to save your driving privileges. Even if the courts still decide in favor of a suspension, you will be able to appeal it at a later date and try once more to keep your driving privileges intact.
Defensive Driving Course
In Texas, if you have received a moving violation such as speeding, most of the time, you will be eligible to notify the court and request to take a defensive driving course to have the ticket dismissed. The court will give you 90 days to successfully complete a defensive driving course. If you complete the course and provide the certificate before your deadline, the ticket will not go on your driving record. You may take defensive driving for a ticket once every 12 months. Keep in mind that four moving violations in a 12-month period will result in your license being suspended.
